Vadim's stories will have you laughing, every time! This is the author who would be the life of the party. It's a pleasure to read about everything from his childhood, to coming to the States, and all the fun of adjusting. I especially liked the story about his dad getting in trouble with the Soviet government when Little Vadim thought he'd write a letter to Japan to the makers of their families AKAI stereo, requesting a spare part to surprise his father. And the one about the special conversation the KGB intercepted over Christmas...

Reading this book aloud to a friend on a roadtrip made the trip go by much faster. I only wish I could hear the author tell the stories in his own voice. They are hilarious!

My favorite stories so far: The super important conversation intercepted over Christmas by the KGB, and how Perestroika ushered into a previously isolated culture the hysterical German erotica that involves pineapples, among other things.

Anyone, from any background, will enjoy reading this!

The book chronicles tales of the author's life - from Kostroma in the USSR to the US - with use of entertaining essay-chapters. Some chapters are about various episodes in Jigoulov's life, while others contain broader commentaries on the baffling and hilarious absurdities of different cultures, including Soviet, post-Soviet, and American (from the Bible Belt to academia). There are witty gems in each chapter (and in the chapter titles), but the larger narrative of how Jigoulov came to the US and what he made of capitalism and southern religion is highly entertaining as well. Chapter 18 ("You will see the country!!") was one of my favorites.
